THE MISSION OF THE AMERICAN RED CROSS

The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. This is done in an efficient, timely and effective manner, as we are 'on call', 24 hrs/7 days, 365 days a year. All Red Cross Disaster Help is Free, gifted by the voluntary contributions of the American people.

The Salem County Chapter provides the following services:

Disaster Services - When a fire, flood or any other disaster hits, the Red Cross if right there to give a helping hand. The chapter provides immediate needs to individuals and then refers and networks with other agencies to further assist the victim.

Blood Services - Bloodmobiles are a very important part of the American Red Cross. Each pint of blood collected may help save up to 3 lives.

Service to Military Families - We provide 24 hour/7days a week, emergency communications and information to the men and women in the U.S. Armed Services, their families and veterans. Our volunteers have also visited Fort Dix to give refreshments, small care kits and a kind word to deploying and returning troops.

Medical Loan Equipment Closet - The Salem County Chapter has assisted many Salem County residents on a loan - free basis, with walkers, bedside commodes, crutches and canes. This has spared them the expense of purchasing these items and they are returned to the chapter when they are no longer in need of using these items.

Health & Safety Services - Millions of Americans have enrolled and been educated in the Red Cross Health & Safety programs. They include CPR/AED, First Aid, Swimming, Lifeguarding, Coach's training, Pet First Aid and Babysitter training. These programs have assisted in saving many lives and some are required, as part of an individual's occupation choice.

Transportation Services - This chapter's drivers are a BIG part of the Blood Services and Services to the Aged and Infirmed programs. These drivers help by transporting the blood collected at the bloodmobiles, to the Musser Blood Center as well as providing transportation for the elderly to medical appointments and treatment facilities.

Hospital Volunteers - They are also known as "Gray Ladies & Gentleman", and volunteer at the Memorial Hospital of Salem County to make a patients day a little brighter.

Human Needs Service - When a Salem County resident is faced with an unusual financial need and does not qualify for other assistance in the County, we work with an agency, on a referral basis only, to assist with a prescription or other various needed service.

The Salem County Chapter also offers Disaster Training Courses for county residents to become educated and involved in assisting the community both locally and nationally. We also do presentations and participate in community events to inform and prepare county residents on how to prepare for emergencies, throughout the year.
